The course aims at providing knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of electrical machines and modern medium/low voltage distribution networks in presence of distributed energy sources and high penetration of information and communication technologies (Smart Grids). The students will be provided with knowledge about the different types of electrical machines, basic knowledge about converters and electrical drives, and about technologies for managing distributed energy sources and demand-side, also in scenarios with a significant presence of electric vehicles.
The student will be able to analyze and choose the electrical machines and technologies for Smart Grid suitable for practical problems, with a special focus on industrial automation and low voltage distribution networks. The achievement of this objective will be expressed through: 1) the ability to use the tools of electrical engineering to understand the operation of electrical machines; 2) the ability to select the type of electrical drive for the applications of interest; 3) the ability to analyze issues related to the evolution of power distribution networks towards the Smart Grid; 4) the ability to identify techniques and methodologies for meeting quality and reliability constraints in distribution networks in the presence of distributed sources and electric vehicles; 5) the ability to use devices and techniques for the evaluation of electrical quantities in Smart Grids.
The student will develop in general also the following transversal competences: ability to use appropriate mathematical tools with practical purposes, ability to analyze machines and drives related to application contexts of interest, ability to analyze the problems inherent to low voltage distribution networks in the presence of distributed sources and choose the most appropriate solutions to meet quality and reliability constraints. The autonomous solution of exercises focused on sizing and designing specific electrical drives for well-defined application problems will contribute to improving the autonomy of self-evaluation and the ability to handle the problem-solving issue with temporal constraints.

The evaluation process consists of a written test during which the student will have to expose the knowledge acquired during the course.
Alternatively, at the student's request, students are offered an optional study of one of the topics covered during the course. This activity can be performed individually or in groups. Students can also propose a topic based on their interests: it will be the teacher's responsibility to verify the relevance with the course contents, calibrate the various aspects, and to finalize the proposal. At the end of the activity, students will have to write a technical report and discuss it during the oral test.
To pass the exam successfully, students will have to demonstrate that they have understood the theoretical concepts covered in class and be able to present them clearly and correctly. Students who have chosen the optional study are required to be able to present and discuss clearly and synthetically the technical report presented.
The final grade is in the range 0-30, with eventual honors. The minimum grade for passing the exam is 18/30.
In the written test, the student will be asked four questions, each of which will be given a grade from 0 to 30. The final grade corresponds to the average of the grades obtained in the four questions. The presentation and discussion of the optional study will replace the questions and will be given a grade in the range 0-30. Honors will be given to students who have passed the exam with full marks and have shown a strong scientific rigor in the treatment of the problems addressed and a particular brilliance of exposition.
