The course enables students to gain in-depth knowledge about the various existing methods for detecting and mapping human brain function. The first part of the course will provide the necessary background so that the students acquire a clear awareness of the more broader multidisciplinary context of the neuroscience with a clear reference to the aspects of neuroimaging and brain research with particular reference to the magnetic/electrical (EEG/MEG) brain activity and hemodynamic (fMRI) response associated with neuronal activity (EEG-fMRI)
This course is characterizing for the engineering sector (ING-INF / 06). The student will know how to apply correctly the main techniques for the analysis of biomedical images with particular reference to Neuroimaging techniques (MEG-EEG-fMRI) using advanced tools and numerical and computational methods for the analysis of brain data (such EEGLAB, Brainstorm, Statistical Parametric Mapping - SPM and ICA Group Of fMRI Toolbox - GIFT) and be able to critically interpret the results obtained consequently deepening the mechanisms underlying the central nervous system. The skills acquired allow the student to know how to choose the most appropriate analysis tool, the ability to properly interpret the experimental results and to be able to possibly work with the team involved in the study of the problem.
The execution of the project will help improve the ability to use general-purpose computational tools (MATLAB) or specific toolboxes for preprocessing and processing of biomedical images and brain signals. The drafting of the report in the style of a scientific paper and its discussion in the classroom, help improve ability to synthesize, communicative and expose clearly the concepts and results, and will also contribute to improving the critical capacity that also stems from teamwork

di una prova scritta della durata di 1.5 ore, che consiste in 30 domande a risposta multipla sugli argomenti del corso;
della relazione scientifica prodotta;
del progetto sviluppato;
VF = 0.7 PS + 0.15 RS + 0.15 P
se si è effettuata la prova orale:
VF = 0.7 ((PS + PO) / 2) + 0.15 RS + 0.15 P
The level of student learning will be defined by evaluating:
a written test 1.5-hour long, and consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions on the topics of the course;
the scientific report produced;
the developed project;
an oral test, which is optional and consisting of 2 theoretical questions. The oral test can be accessed only if the student passed the written test (score of 18 or more). Written and oral tests must be done in the same session.
For students with disabilities and SLD, at the request of the student, the examination methods may be adapted in the light of the provisions of the University guidelines.
In the written test, the student will have to demonstrate that he/she has understood and acquired the concepts presented in the course. The written test will be graded between 0 and 30.
In the scientific report, the student will have to demonstrate clarity of communication and ability to summarize. The scientific report will be graded between 0 and 30.
In the project, the student must be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge independently to practical problems. The project will be graded between 0 and 30
The oral test, if performed, will be graded between 0 and 30.
Attribution of the final mark out of thirty, with possible honors.
In order for the overall outcome of the evaluation to be positive, the student must achieve at least the sufficiency, equal to 18/30, in each of the tests taken. The final mark (FM) will be calculated on the basis of the marks of the written test (WT), of the scientific report (SR), of the project (P) and of the oral test (OT), if any, as follows:
if the oral test has not been carried out:
FM = 0.7 WT + 0.15 SR + 0.15 P
if the oral test has been carried out:
FM = 0.7 ((WT + OT) / 2) + 0.15 SR + 0.15 P
Honors will be awarded to the student who, having achieved the maximum evaluation, has demonstrated complete mastery of the subject.
