Basic knowledge of road pavement construction
Basic knowledge of road pavement construction
Theory lessons, 48 hours.
Theory lessons, 48 hours.
The course intends to provide insights on theoretical
and practical approach to evaluate the sustainability
of the technologies developed to address
environmental issues concerning transportation
infrastructures construction. The course aims at
providing information about the basic and advanced
characterization of mechanical properties and
durability of construction materials as well as
technological processes for resilient and low
environmental impact pavement solutions (e.g.
according to carbon footprint reduction and circular
economy objectives).
The course will provide students with specific skills
useful for the critical analysis of practical issues
mainly related to road construction. Theoretical
background and technical skills will be acquired
through classroom lectures.
Analytical and methodological skills acquired during
the course will be helpful for the student in the design
and optimization of technological processes within
the framework of Environmental Engineering. The
background gained at the end of the course will
enable the learning and communication skills as well
as judgment autonomy of the students to be
improved in a multidisciplinary context.

Final examination consists in an oral discussion on one or more topics concerning the current sustainable technologies for road construction as well as properties characterization of road materials.
A comprehensive knowledge and an adequately correct exposition with technical terminology of discussed topics are evaluated in order to pass the examination. The level of insight of the knowledges aimed at solving specific and practical engineering issues through a proper selection of materials and related construction process are evaluated as well. During the oral examination student has to prove a suitable understanding and technical ability to properly use tools and methods aimed at investigating the main properties of materials and an adequate critical analysis in identifying the most specific technological processes for resilient and low environmental impact road pavement.
The final mark is expressed in thirtieths, cum laude if deserved. The minimum mark in order to pass the examination is 18 out of 30.
An adequate understanding of all topics discussed during the exam is required to pass the examination with the minimum mark. Further score is assigned based on the learning level of discussed topics. The full marks (30 out 30 cum laude) is achieved to the students which showed clearness and brightness of exposition as well as a complete mastery in the selection and use of analysis methods aimed at solving typical engineering issues towards a sustainable road construction.
