PREREQUISITI PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of marina spatial planning, relational database management and Microsoft Excel. In order to use a GIS software (open source), experiences with software for basic file management and browsing are needed.

MODALITÀ DI SVOLGIMENTO DEL CORSO DEVELOPMENT OF THE COURSE

The course will include four hours of theoretical lessons concerning the basic concepts of GIS, cartography and geodesy. Other six hours of the course will be devoted to the presentation of real case studies. The remaining hours of the course (14) will be devoted to classroom practical exercises. The presence, not mandatory, is strongly recommended, especially during exercise hours. The practical lessons will take place in the didactic computer room where students will have few workstations available. However, it is advisable for students with their own laptop to bring it because they may easily repeat the exercises even outside the lesson time.

RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO ATTESI LEARNING OUTCOMES
Conoscenze e comprensione.

Knowledge and Understanding.

The course aims to provide the students the skills needed to learn the rationale and the main features of Geographic Information Systems (Geographical Information System), through the use of open source software QGIS.Introduction to essential element of cartography and geodesy, which allow students to understand the geographic dimension of marine and coastal issues. Introduction of the underlying concept of management, geo-processing and analysis of geographical database. Introduction to raster and vector data model on which the representation of reality in GIS is based, highlighting their respective advantages. Finally, the students will be introduced at the geo-referencing and data digitalization techniques and at the production of an appropriate cartographic output.

Capacity to apply Knowledge and Understanding.

Although the course envisages the use of specific software (Q GIS) for practical tutorials, students will learn to use a set of tools for viewing and for performing spatial analysis, that are of common use in different GIS software. This approach will enable the student to interact with more GIS software. The students should demonstrate that they have understood which geo-processing tool is used to achieve a result performing spatial analysis. The most important skill that the students will achieve is how response to a specific issue in marine spatial planning adopting different geo processing tools.

Transversal Skills.

The students will acquire the ability to face with geographic problems related to the coastal and marine system. Think spatially asking "why it is where" is the most important skill that the course wants to stimulate and enhance among the students. Moreover, by using information layers relating to various scientific and socio-economic disciplines, the student will become familiar with a multidisciplinary approach, useful when they will cope with complex real world issues.

MODALITÀ DI SVOLGIMENTO DELL'ESAME DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXAMINATION

Learning Evaluation Methods.

The final exam includes the preparation of written report about the laboratory exercises in order to assess the acquired knowledge during the course. The final relation must report the production of a cartographic output. The final exam will be completed with an oral test on three questions.

Learning Evaluation Criteria.

At the beginning of the course a short questionnaire on the main topics is compiled. This questionnaire will then be repeated during the final test in order to evaluate the actual acquisition of the essential concepts.

Learning Measurement Criteria.

The final vote is in a scale of thirty. The exam is passed when the vote is greater than or equal to 18.

Final Mark Allocation Criteria.

The final vote is given by evaluating the oral test. The “lode” is attributed when the student has demonstrated a deep understanding of the matter.
