The student must demonstrate that he has understood the main forcings that regulate the large-scale dynamics of the ocean, as well as the processes of formation and transformation of the main water masses and how these processes characterize the global thermohaline circulation.
At the end of the course, students must be able to assess the main mechanisms that regulate the dynamics and mechanisms of formation and transformation of water masses with reference also to the Mediterranean Sea.
The course aims to provide those notions that can also be used in other fields of marine sciences.
Diagrammi T/S. Bilancio E-(P+R). Conservazione del sale e bilancio di volume.

Distribution of the main oceanographic parameters in both the horizontal and vertical planes. T / S diagrams. Balance E- (P + R). Salt conservation and volume balance.
The equations of motion. Friction and turbulence. Motion in the absence of friction: inertial motion and geostrophic balance. Turbulent Viscosity. Response of the superficial marine layer to winds. Global thermohaline circulation. Tides and waves.
Measurement tools and methods. Main climatological characteristics of the oceans and the Mediterranean Sea.
L’apprendimento sarà valutato tramite i voti.
The exam generally consists of an oral test. During the course, however, two tests may be carried out to ascertain the degree of learning of the subject.
In the case of oral tests, the assessment will be based on the fundamental criterion of knowledge of the subject. After that, knowledge of technical language and reasoning are decisive criteria for assigning the vote.
The written tests will be assessed based on the correctness of the answers given and in the open answers, in the ability to synthesize and knowledge of the technical language
Learning will be assessed through grades
The final grade in the case of the oral tests will be given by a general assessment of the examination's compliance with the assessment criteria
In the case of the written tests, the correct answers are worth one point while the partially correct ones are worth 0.5 points. There are no penalties for incorrect answers and the sum of the scores of the two written tests provides the final grade
