Botanica, Chimica generale
Knowledge of the main topics in Ecology, Zoology, Botany, and General
Chemistry
Lectures (6 credits, 48 hours), laboratory practical exercises and field
activities in small groups
The course allows students to acquire fundamental knowledge of marine biology, the marine environment and the mechanisms of adaptation of organisms to it
During the lectures, case studies and practical examples will be presented to be analyzed and commented on. Furthermore, the practical activities foreseen in the course will contribute to improve the level of autonomy to deal in a practical way with the topics of marine biology
The course allows students to acquire basic skills in marine ecology and applied marine ecology and to use those already acquired in other courses (e.g., zoology, botany)
Mare e terra a confronto.
Contents (lectures, 6 CFU, 48 hours): Characteristics of the marine environment: seas and oceans, topography of the ocean floor, properties of sea water, sea currents, upwelling and downwelling, waves and tides, habitats and bioconstructions. comparison between sea and land. Adaptations of marine organisms: adaptations to buoyancy, swimming movements, support structures, and feeding of marine organisms, metabolism and adaptation to low and high temperatures, use of oxygen, adaptation to exposure to air, adaptation to salinity and osmoregulation, adaptation to pressure and light, bioluminescence and adaptations to deep environments, communication in water. Biodiversity and ecology of the benthos: differences between plankton and benthos, femtobenthos (viruses), pico-, nano-, micro-, meio-, macr-o and mega-benthos, distribution of benthos in space and time, factors that influence the distribution of the benthos, zoning of the benthos, the models of Peres and Picard and of Riedl. Biodiversity and ecology of plankton: phytoplankton and zooplankton, subdivision based on the distribution in the water column, holoplankton and meroplankton, femto-, pico- nano-, micro-, meso- macro- and mega-plankton, distribution of plankton and factors that influence the distribution based on the spatial scale, El Niño, vertical migrations of plankton, primary productivity at different latitudes. Hints of Biodiversity and Ecology of the Necton.
Laboratory exercises (1 CFU, 8 hours / student): The exercises consist in the collection of marine samples in the field and in laboratory activities concerning the extraction and recognition of benthic organisms
The exam consists of a written test with 20 multiple choice questions and 5 open questions on the topics covered in the course. The duration of the test is 1 hour. The oral exam is optional
The students must demonstrate that they have learned the main characteristics, both biotic and abiotic, of marine environments and communities, demonstrating that they have also achieved the ability to apply the knowledge acquired
The final mark is awarded out of thirty. The exam is passed when the
grade is greater than or equal to 18. It is expected to be awarded the
highest marks with honors (30 cum laude).
The final grade is obtained by adding the score obtained from the multiple choice answers and that of the open answers. Appropriate and relevant content, and clarity of presentation will be considered as fundamental criteria for assigning the score to open answers
