Laura triennale in ambito scientifico.
Undergraduate degree in the general field of science. There are no specific pre-requisites, but a background of general knowledge of marine biology and diversity of marine photosynthetic organisms (algae and seagrasses) is useful. Equipment for activities to perform in the field (wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel) is not mandatory but it is recommended.
The course consists of class lectures, fieldtrips to rocky shores located in the area of Ancona and laboratory classes.
The aim of the course is to provide students with a good general knowledge of the main methods for sampling and analysis of marine algae and seagrasses, by class lectures and practical activities in the field and in the laboratory. Field activities include sampling of phytoplankton and phytobenthos, carried out both from the shore and by snorkelling.
At the end of the course the students will be able to select autonomously the best methods, sampling designs and analyses for census and monitoring of marine algal and seagrass communities.
Field activities give the students the opportunity to apply in the practice the notions acquired in the class lectures. Carrying out field activities stimulates the capacity of interaction and coordination required for efficient teamwork.
Intoduction to marine algae and seagrasses and the factors that affect their distribution. Description of the main methods used for their sampling and analysis. Difference between destructive and non-destructive methods. Storage of samples and sorting of phytobenthic and phytoplanktic organisms. Identification and quantification of o the main groups of microalgae and macroalgae by microscopic observation. Identification of the main algal species of interest for conservation purposes and those harmful for humans. Main types of experiments performed on macroalgal and seagrass communities. Sampling designs used for assessments of human impacts on macroalgal and seagrass communities.
1) Presentazione di gruppo di una esperienza di lavoro in cui vengono applicate metodi, strategie di campionamento e analisi descritte durante il corso;
The assessment of the knowledge gained in the course will be based on two evaluations:
1) Group presentation of a work experience in which methods, sampling strategies and analyses described in the course will be applied;
2) Oral exam consisting of one or more questions on the topics of the course, aimed at verifying the level of knowledge and the use of an appropriate terminology.
The students must demonstrate to have acquired the notions taught in the theoretical part of the course and to be able to apply to specific case studies the techniques, sampling strategies and methods of analysis learnt.
The final grade is expressed in a numerical scale from zero to thirty. The exam is passed when the vote is greater than or equal to 18.
The final grade is based on evaluation of the group presentation and the oral exam. The notation “cum laude” is attributed to students who demonstrate a particularly good understanding and knowledge of the course topics.
