Thesis
Thesis
The Thesis aims to make students deal autonomously with a topic in the field of Engineering, under the guidance of a Tutor. The students must propose several alternative solutions for the technical design task that is assigned to them, or develop research topics from both the theoretical and experimental point of view. In doing so the students gain practical experience in the use of typical engineering methods, techniques and processes.
The aim of the Thesis is to give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired during the two years of the course with the objective to resolve complex technical/scientific Environmental Engineering tasks, and to contribute to the development of research in a specific field. In this type of activity students integrate and gain a more thorough understanding of the concepts, procedures and methods they have studied, using an inter-disciplinary approach. A further aim of the Thesis is to assess the ability of the student to handle an effective technical discussion of the work carried out.
The result of this project is a written Thesis, with relative graphs and tables, and a discussion. In this way the students develop the ability to be concise and clear so as to allow for correct technical and scientific communication in an inter-disciplinary environment.

Depending on the subject chosen the student will be guided by a tutor while carrying out and drawing up the Thesis. For example, activities include: analysis of the state of the art, definition of methodology in order to extend and develop current knowledge, collection and analysis of results, design of the project (where applicable).

The students will be assessed on the basis of the Thesis submitted and the final discussion.
The student’s preparation will be assessed on the basis of the quality and the completeness of the Thesis, the relevance of the topic with respect to the objectives of the Course of Study, the quality of the presentation and the student’s ability to discuss the topic.
The final overall mark is out of 110, with a minimum score of 66, with possible honours (“cum laude”).
The final mark will take into consideration the student’s overall marks, and will assess the Thesis and the final discussion. The examination panel assigns the final mark by majority vote. The calculation of the curriculum is defined as the average mark obtained considering the marks for the single didactic activities, weighted according to the number of ETS credits assigned for each subject, and expressed out of 110. The examination panel, after examining the final Thesis, can assign up to a maximum of 7 extra marks. Honours (“cum laude”) can be given by majority vote (2/3 of the examination panel members). The Thesis must be written and discussed in English.
