PREREQUISITI PREREQUISITES

Buona conoscenza della storia contemporanea italiana e internazionale.

Good knowledge of Italian and international Modern history.

MODALITÀ DI SVOLGIMENTO DEL CORSO DEVELOPMENT OF THE COURSE

The course will be conducted through frontal lessons of theoretical content.

RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO ATTESI LEARNING OUTCOMES
Conoscenze e comprensione.

Knowledge and Understanding.

The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of industry and company models that have been established and alternated on a global scale since the nineteenth century. This goal will necessarily be pursued through a broad spectrum analysis, but it will also draw on the presentation of some important country's or company's case studies.

The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of industry and business models that have been established and alternated on a global scale since the nineteenth century. This objective will necessarily be pursued through a broad spectrum analysis, but it will also draw on the presentation of some important case studies of national and business.

Capacity to apply Knowledge and Understanding.

This course want to give to the students the cognitive and interpretative tools for: reading the processes that signed the evolution of the world’s industrial system in the 19th and 20th centuries; placing in the correct historical context the techniques of investigation and the practices learned in other courses related to the Cds; observing the ways in which the modern industry, in its becoming, influenced the fields of economics, politics, institutions and culture and has nevertheless been conditioned by it.

Transversal Skills.

The course aims to integrate students' expressive skills, to whom we’ll require a good oral presentation, and to strengthen critical skills. This second goal will be pursued by taking care some case studies that can highlight, for example, how often the categories used to understand macroeconomic phenomena are not compatible with the historical reality of subjects and processes of lower dimensional scale. These case studies also will show that apparent linear cause/effect relationships hide more complex interlaces that require the use of specific interpretative keys.

PROGRAMMA PROGRAM

1. La rivoluzione dei consumi
4. L’evoluzione dei luoghi di consumi
5. Il consumo di tempo libero
6. L’ascesa dell’industria turistica
7. Consumo e mass media
8. Dalla pubblicità al brand management
9. Credito e consumo
10. Nuove forme di consumo

The goals of first module are two:
a) driving the students along the rugged road that has led Italy to transform - since the Giolitti’s age, but in a full and definitive way only in the 1950s and 1960s - in an industrialized country. An analysis of the "prerequisites" of this development, as well as of the structural constraints complained by Italy between the eighth and twentieth centuries, will be added to the overview of the endogenous and international economic trends and the economic policy choices that greatly influenced this path.
b) investigating the birth of mass society in the western world, examining a micro variable o very important in the field macroeconomics as the enterprise. In particular, the origins of the American large corporation and its developments in the course of the twentieth century will be traced. In addition, we’ll consider some important models of enterprise and industry out of USA, including the German, the Soviet and the Japanese ones.
The subject is the consumer society in the Western Countries during the XXth century.
The course deals with the following issues
11. The consumption revolution
12. The consumer society in U.S.
13. The Marshall Plan and the revolution of rising expectations in Europe
14. Evolution of consumption spaces
15. Leisure and free time
16. The rise of tourism industry
17. Consumption and mass media
18. From advertising to brand management
19. Credit and consumption
20. New types of consumption.

MODALITÀ DI SVOLGIMENTO DELL'ESAME DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXAMINATION

Learning Evaluation Methods.

The exam will be in an oral talk.

Learning Evaluation Criteria.

During the exam, students will have to demonstrate that they have acquired an appropriate knowledge of the main steps of Italian and international industrial history, to be able to put them into the correct chronological context and to interpret them critically in light of both the economic history, both of the general history. We’ll estimate also the language property and the ability to relate, if appropriate, not immediately close phenomena from the chronological or geographical point of view.

Learning Measurement Criteria.

The vote will be expressed in the thirtieth. The exam will be passed with a vote of at least 18/30. It is foreseen to award the highest marks with praise (30 and praise).

Final Mark Allocation Criteria.

To pass the exam students must show, at least, a sufficient knowledge of the subjects treated during the oral test. To earn the praise students have to have a remarkable competence on these subjects, that is a notable ability to interpret and demonstrate the phenomena discussed.
