PREREQUISITI PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of spatial and volumetric relationships in architecture, of dialogue with a given urban context, graphic skills with basic knowledge of digital drawing software.

MODALITÀ DI SVOLGIMENTO DEL CORSO DEVELOPMENT OF THE COURSE

The design studio is primarily carried out through seminars, individual desk reviews, open public reviews (intermediate reviews). The design studio also includes the direct involvement of students through exercises and power point presentations for the review of the design project. The design studio is structured with working groups of two/three persons. Each group develops an architectural and urban design, producing graphic panels and architectural models, and starting from the analysis of the urban and territorial context, up to the design of one or more building’s technical details. The design studio is combined with the "Urban Planning Studio" and the " History of Contemporary Architecture Studio" (1st semester), and with the "Construction Principles and Techniques Studio" (2nd semester).

RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO ATTESI LEARNING OUTCOMES
Conoscenze e comprensione.

Knowledge and Understanding.

The Laboratory aims to implement, through exercises, the theoretical lessons learned during the connected course, related to the distribution and functional aspects of one or more buildings of collective character. The students have to apply disciplines of the area of representation and of the survey, of architectural design and restoration area, urban area, area of building production and building technologies to obtain a complete comprehension of the whole process of the urban and architectonic design.

Capacity to apply Knowledge and Understanding.

To apply the concepts the starting point consists in the interpretation of the environment, intended as a guideline for the design development, both in the case you have to intervene on a free area or to reconfigure an existing building. This ability will be carried on through design exercises, aimed at studying the types of public and private buildings in which the interdependences between the building and the city are clear, as well as the ones connected to the landscape and urban green.

Transversal Skills.

Each working group will have to develop a different project, developing all the issues, and present it through technical drawings or renders. This will allow the student to improve his ability to communicate originating from the team-working, as well as his ability to learn and get the proper conclusions. The teaching of the laboratory activity is related with the disciplines of Architecture and Art, History, Representation, Survey, Architectural and Engineering design.

PROGRAMMA PROGRAM

The design studio consists on the elaboration and presentation of an architectural and urban design project, as agreed with the professor. With a cross-cutting approach, through different scales and multidisciplinary aspects of design, the studio starts from the urban and territorial analysis of a context up to the definition of an architectural design project including one or more technical details of the building. Approaching progressively the building’s detailed scale, the class provides the necessary theoretical background, as well as the technical skills and tools to support the development of the design work, with particular attention to: study of the territorial and landscape context and the urban fabric, relationship between architecture and the city, activities programme of the building within a broader strategic vision at the urban scale, aspects related to the building structure (volumes’ articulation and structural system), to the functionality and spatiality of the project, to the study of the facade, the openings, the transparency / opacity of the building skin, the environmental performance and sustainability, as well as the relationship that the new structure is able to establish with the surrounding environment, especially when it is a collective public building. Particular attention is dedicated to the topic of urban and architectural recycle, with the idea that the repair and regeneration of existing structures, especially in earthquake areas such as the Marche Region, are today the crucial issues that future designers will have to deal with.
The design studio is combined with the "Urban Planning Studio" and the " History of Contemporary Architecture Studio" (1st semester), and with the "Construction Principles and Techniques Studio" (2nd semester). For an effective integration of the different topics in the design process, intermediate reviews with the participation of all the disciplines are planned.
