Gli studenti iscritti al primo anno devono effettuare un test di lingua organizzato dal Centro di Supporto per l’Apprendimento delle Lingue (CSAL). Il test si svolge all’inizio dell’anno accademico e serve per valutare il grado di conoscenza dell’inglese. Gli studenti che ottengono un punteggio basso devono utilizzare il software di auto-apprendimento English Express – corso lingua base disponibile nella Mediateca CSAL - per raggiungere il livello di conoscenza minimo richiesto (CEFR A2+/B1) per frequentare le esercitazioni di inglese (tenute nel 2° ciclo).
Students enrolled on the first year of the degree course must take an English Language Placement Test, organized by the University Language Centre (CSAL). This will be held at the start of the academic year and is useful for assessing the students’ current level of English. Any students who get a low score must follow an elementary level self- study course (English Express) using the software in the CSAL self-study centre in order to reach the minimum level (CEFR A2+/B1) needed to be able to follow the English language lessons which will be held in the second semester.
Esercitazioni frontali organizzate dal CSAL (Dott.ssa Elena Delfina Agnelli e Dott. Michael Lacey-Freeman) nel 2° ciclo per gli studenti iscritti al primo anno che forniscono competenze grammaticali e lessicali, d’ascolto, di lettura e della lingua parlata e la pronuncia ad un livello intermedio (B1+).
Face to face classroom lessons organized by the CSAL (Dr. Elena Delfina Agnelli and Dr. Michael Lacey-Freeman). The English course is part of the first year syllabus and the lessons are held in the second semester. They aim to improve the students’ English language skills regarding grammar and vocabulary, listening, speaking and pronunciation, bringing the students to an intermediate level of knowledge (B1+).
Gli studenti apprenderanno gli aspetti grammaticali e lessicali necessari per capire il senso globale di una tipologia testuale varia e per cogliere i nodi informativi principali di testi scritti di argomento familiare e di natura scientifica.
Capacità di applicare conoscenze e comprensione.
Gli studenti dovranno essere in grado di capire il senso globale ed i particolari essenziali di messaggi orali su una varietà di argomenti e di poter comunicare ed esprimersi oralmente.

Knowledge and Understanding.
The students will learn the language skills that enable them to understand the general meaning of various types of written texts and to recognize the significant points in both general and scientific documents in the English language.
Capacity to apply Knowledge and Understanding.
The students must be able to understand the general meaning and specific information when listening to a variety of audio materials and must be able to express their understanding in spoken English.

Il grado di conoscenza acquisito dagli studenti viene verificato attraverso un test su PC ed un esame orale.
Criteri di valutazione dell'apprendimento.
La prova scritta (test su PC) è composta di 5 esercizi: Ascolto (6 domande), Pronuncia (5 domande), Grammatica (15 domande), Lettura (4 domande), Riempimento (10 spazi). Le domande sono del tipo: scelta multipla, vero/falso. Il tempo disponibile è 1
ora e 10 minuti.
Durante la prova orale gli studenti dovranno svolgere un breve colloquio in inglese su aspetti riguardanti il loro percorso universitario, leggere un brano tratto da un libro di testo scientifico in inglese e tradurlo in italiano.
Criteri di misurazione dell'apprendimento.
Il voto finale è attribuito in trentesimi. L’esame si intende superato quando il voto è maggiore o uguale a 18. È prevista l’assegnazione del massimo dei voti con lode (30 e lode).
Criteri di attribuzione del voto finale.
Il voto finale viene attribuito sommando alla valutazione dello scritto quella della prova orale. La lode viene attribuita quando il punteggio ottenuto dalla precedente somma superi il valore 30 e contemporaneamente lo studente abbia dimostrato piena padronanza della materia.
Learning Evaluation Methods.
The students’ knowledge will be tested via a computer-based test and an oral examination.
Learning Evaluation Criteria.
The computer-based test has 5 sections: Listening (6 questions); Pronunciation (5 questions); Grammar (15 questions);, Reading (4 questions); Gap-fill (10 gaps). The questions are all Multiple choice or True/False. The maximum set time for the test is 1 hour 10 minutes.
During the oral examination the students will be asked to hold a short conversation concerning their chosen university studies. They will also be expected to read a short scientific text in English and translate it into Italian.
Learning Measurement Criteria.
The final score is a result out of 30, with 18/30 being the minimum pass mark. The maximum score of 30/30 may be given with honours (“cum laude”).
Final Mark Allocation Criteria.
The final score is calculated by adding together the score for the computer-based test and the oral examination. Honours (“cum laude”) will be given when the final calculated score is greater than 30/30 and the student has proved to be fully competent in the subjec
